Effective April 1, 2016, the State of California instituted a mandatory commercial organics recycling statute, requiring all businesses that generate eight cubic yards or more of organic discards per week to divert this material from the landfill by establishing an organics recycling program. Effective January 1, 2017, the statute applies to all businesses that generate four cubic yards or more of organic discards per week. "Business" includes public and private, for-profit, and non-profit organizations. Multi-family complexes are only required to divert plant debris for composting; however, organics recycling service for food scraps and food soiled paper generated by residents is available to MFD properties through the City's franchise agreement with Amador Valley Industries. The City would like businesses to know that if you are not currently sorting food scraps for composting, you can and should be able to save money when you add organics recycling service for your business. Organics collection service costs 50% less than regular garbage service. When your business establishes organics collection service, you should be able to reduce the volume of your weekly garbage service and reduce your monthly service costs. Amador Valley Industries can help your business establish a customized collection program that works for you.
